All Signs Point To Raiders HC Antonio Pierce Staying Put

Mon Jan 01, 2025, 9:14pm

To be clear, there hasn’t been an official confirmation from Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis on the future of head coach Antonio Pierce. In fact, leading up to his presser this morning, not even league insiders knew what was happening.

However, judging from the fact that Pierce gave a full press conference amid all the conjecture, it would appear he’s coming back for Year 2.

After a four-win season, it was controversial whether Pierce should return or not. To begin his presser on Monday, Pierce seemed rather cool and collected, you might even say he appeared confident. When asked about the discussion of his job status, Pierce said, “It is only coming from outside the building.” He’s referring to the “noise” around the league pertaining to his future. As far as he’s concerned, nothing internally changed. So that’s that.

The next question was the starting quarterback for next season. On the matter, Pierce admitted that he made a mistake starting Gardner Minshew. Aidan O’Connell was significantly more consistent and created a higher chance for success. While Pierce has stated that O’Connell is a starting caliber quarterback, his eyes are set on a new one.

“I hope to have more impact on the quarterback room,” Pierce said. This certainly lends to the theory that general manager Tom Telesco had a hand in determining who was going to be starting for the Raiders. Looking ahead, Davis has made it known that new minority owner Tom Brady will have have a say in determining the course of action regarding a quarterback prospect.

Antonio Pierce Retaining Continuity In 2025

Besides offensive coordinator, some fans wish for the coaches to remain the same. But Scott Turner and his father, Norv have a chance to retain their jobs. “When you watched us play it just looked right,” Pierce said. “You saw more chemistry, more continuity, and more attention to detail.”

Comparatively, it does not sound like defensive coordinator, Patrick Graham will be returning. “[Graham] is going to be a head coach in this league,” Pierce said. “He has been a really good coordinator for us for three years and we will see what happens.” Graham will surely receive some interviews to explore his options this offseason. His defense was in the top 15 of the league for yards allowed per game.

One of the positives of retaining Pierce is a domino effect for Maxx Crosby. “The Condor” will need an extension this offseason and the two have a great relationship. No. 98 is also fond of the head coach and pleaded for him to keep his job last offseason.

This is a very important offseason and with many question marks. How many players will be returning from this campaign? The Raiders have the sixth overall pick and have over $100 million cap space to work with this offseason. Quarterback needs to be addressed whether threw the draft or free agency. Shedeur Sanders could still be in play as well for Pierce and Co. Needless to say, this upcoming offseason will be pivotal for both Pierce and the Raiders.
