AFC West: Knee-Jerk Reactions To Chiefs’ Divisional Round Win

Tue Jan 01, 2025, 5:13am

One down, two to go. The Kansas City Chiefs are now just a couple of games away from making NFL history. If they can cap this season off with a Super Bowl win, they will be the first team ever to three-peat as champions.

A two-score win is a fantastic way to kick off that quest to make history. However, it wasn’t as straightforward as it looked. Let’s dive into a more concise analysis, given that only one AFC West team remains in the postseason.

AFC West Knee Jerk Reactions: Chiefs 23, Texans 14 (Whew)

That final score is highly misleading. You could make the case that the Texans outplayed the Chiefs for the better part of that game. Houston outgained Kansas City by over 100 yards and did not turn over the ball once. Previously, teams that did this were 46-0 in the postseason.

Fortunately, several timely and questionable penalties saved the Chiefs. It also didn’t hurt that Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn looked like he had never kicked a football outdoors before. This is not to say that the Chiefs played a terrible game. They made plenty of big plays in their own right. That does not change the fact that it feels like the Chiefs have had everything break their way all season.

Regardless, a win is a win. Any team looking to pull off the feat that Kansas City is undertaking needs to catch a couple of breaks to make it happen. At some point, one must wonder when their luck will run out. Whether it does or not, the Chiefs can always fall back on one of the most talented rosters in the league led by both a future Hall of Fame head coach in Andy Reid and a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. There are certainly worse spots to be in.
