We’re officially two weeks away from the 2025 NFL Draft. In the meantime, teams around the National Football League will continue adding pieces to their roster as they see fit. That includes both the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos of the AFC West.
On Friday, both the Chiefs and Broncos announced a signing of their own. Linebacker Jack Cochrane was first, who returned to Kansas City by way of a restricted free agent tender. In his three years with the two-time Super Bowl champions from 2021 onward, Cochrane recorded 42 tackles with two being in the backfield alongside one pass breakup.
It’s been mostly special teams for the 26-year-old linebacker up to this point, totaling 895 snaps over three years in this phase of the game.
Next was safety Sam Franklin, whose agreement with Denver earlier in the week became official. Franklin, like Cochrane, has spent a majority of time on special teams up to this point. The 29-year-old safety has accumulated 1,327 snaps on such plays through five seasons, taking the field for no less than 70% of special teams plays over each of his last three campaigns.
Comparatively, Franklin has yet to total more than 27% of defensive snaps in any season of his career.
The Broncos’ new safety is no stranger to earning snaps on defense, however. In 2023, Franklin took the field for 289 snaps against opposing offenses. He was able to break up three passes his way, in addition to a 99-yard pick-six.
On the flip side, Franklin’s run grade of 38.4 via Pro Football Focus was the fifth-lowest among all safeties league-wide who recorded at least 200 defensive snaps that season. There’s work to be done in that area.
