Unless a trade partner materializes, it appears two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen will be released by the Washington Commanders. Should the Las Vegas Raiders consider him?
The Washington Commanders picked up Jonathan Allen’s fifth-year option, which meant he got $10.05 million in 2021, and then they signed him to a four-year extension worth $72 million. During the 2024 season, Allen took the field for eight games, racking up 19 total tackles and notching three sacks. Allen recorded 26 tackles for a loss and 16.5 sacks in his consecutive Pro Bowl seasons from 2021 to 22.
Is Jonathan Allen worth a flyer if you’re the Raiders?
Mike Silver mentioned that the Commanders might let Allen go to save some money. This will happen if they can’t find anyone to trade with. If he gets released, many teams are likely to show interest in him. So, Jeremy Fowler from ESPN shared that the 49ers and Commanders were looking into the possibility of trading Allen as part of a deal that would have sent WR Deebo Samuel to Washington. However, the 49ers viewed Allen’s $16.4 million 2025 salary as a hurdle, preventing him from being part of the deal.
So, Allen is heading into the last year of his contract, and he’s got a base salary of $15.5 million. So, with Washington just giving DT Daron Payne a four-year, $90 million extension and bringing in DT Jer’Zhan Newton in the second round, it seems pretty reasonable to think that moving on from Allen might be the next move.
If the Commanders decide to trade or release Allen, they could open up almost $17 million in cap space since there’s no guaranteed money left on his contract. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Washington is looking to manage Allen’s situation in a fair way. They’ll be helping him find a favorable opportunity, whether that’s through a trade or free agency.
Allen, who was a first-round pick from Alabama back in 2017, kicked things off with a four-year rookie contract worth $11.596 million. That deal also came with a nice signing bonus of $6.573 million.
