Las Vegas Raiders, Geno Smith Get Extension Done – And Boy, Is It Good

Thu Apr 04, 2025, 9:11pm

A Geno Smith extension with the Las Vegas Raiders was imminent since the very day Sin City agreed to trade for the 34-year-old quarterback. Pete Carroll and John Spytek didn’t trade for a signal caller with one-year left on his deal without plans of keeping that player around, nor did Smith essentially force his way out of Seattle by declining each and every proposed extension without giving any counter-offer just to move for a few months then relocate once more after the ’25 season.

But, as the days turned into weeks, no Geno Smith extension took place. No press conference was held to welcome the Raiders’ new starting quarterback, even.

Almost four whole weeks later, the wait has come to an end. Smith is remaining in Sin City for an extended period of time, agreeing to a two-year, $75 million extension that has a max value of $85.5.

Including Smith’s pre-existing 2025 salary, this puts him at a combined three-year, $100 million deal–not including potential bonus cash. This puts the new Raiders signal caller at $33.3 million per season, making him the second-lowest paid starting quarterback annually who’s on a multi-year deal that isn’t a rookie contract.

How’s that for a bargain?

Justin Fields, who signed a ‘Prove it deal‘ with the New York Jets this offseason, stands as the only starting quarterback across the NFL paid less than Smith per season under the criteria listed above.

Players such as C.J. Stroud, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels would soar past Smith’s $33.3 million annual pay over the next three years had they been up for an extension this offseason. Bo Nix and Drake Maye are two other players on rookie deals who would do the same, among others.

Expect Brock Purdy to fly past Smith too.
