If nothing else, Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis is fully self-aware of the lack of his team’s on-field success—no wonder he loves the offseason.
Let’s be clear; Raider Nation fully understands the harsh reality. The Raiders haven’t been relevant since 2002, with just a couple of exceptions, namely their 2016 magical run. And let’s not forget their 2021 season. Other than that, the Silver and Black haven’t won much in more than a generation. Davis, as the owner, is fully aware of this situation.
At least he isn’t misleading fans.
When you take that into consideration, is it then shocking that Davis recently said, “I say it every year, this is my favorite time: We are undefeated.” Yeah, he said that. Technically, he’s not incorrect; the Raiders haven’t lost this offseason–they acquired Geno Smith along with a bevy of underrated defenders. Still, the team is on their third coach and general manager in the last few years. In case you weren’t aware, the team has been 18-33 in that run.
In addition, Davis took responsibility for some of these failures.
“I just didn’t get it right. That’s all there is to it. You always want to compete, but you have to be honest. Are we going to win the Super Bowl this year? I don’t know. It’s possible.”
It would be challenging, but not impossible, to transition from a 4-13 record to a playoff contender. New head coach Pete Carroll has his quarterback and he’s won at every level; the Raiders have to be next, right? They’ve tried everything else under Mark Davis—they rehashed the Jon Gruden era, they looked to a young “guru” in Josh McDaniels, and they even hired the coach that “the players wanted” in Antonio Pierce. It all failed, guys.
Maybe Carroll can help the Raiders with more than just “winning” the offseason.
